The 'Oil on Canvas' Art Exhibition is a community project run by local campaign group 'Clean Energy Action', as part of the national effort to raise awareness about the problems created by increased fossil fuel extraction in our most treasured places.

Our ultimate goal is to stop deep sea oil exploration and new onshore oil projects on public conservation land. We want to inspire people to 'think beyond oil' and push for home grown renewable alternatives.

The exhibition is a platform to showcase artist's responses to these issues, using art as a language to engage people, inspire them to take positive action and get communities across the Top of the South to work together to find sustainable, future-proofed solutions.

On the opening night, Jeannette Fitzsimons will talk about the bigger picture of why we need to leave fossil fuels in the ground, Marlborough entrepreneur Nick Gerristen will give a positive outlook on the exciting alternatives to fossil fuels, and wildlife photographer Rod Morris will speak about biodiversity loss and the impact of fossil fuel extraction on conservation land and marine reserves.

The exhibition includes a cross section of works, ranging from well established artists to people who make art but have never shown their work publicly, in many different mediums, including paintings, sculpture and installations.

The exhibition is run as a blind auction, with some of the proceeds being donated to
the ongoing campaigns of 'Clean Energy Action'.
