Honegger: Pacific 231
Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 1
Saint-Saëns: Symphony No. 3, ‘Organ’

A concert with the melody and majesty of Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony at its core – a work loved not only by orchestral audiences but with themes well-known through its adaptation as a 1970s pop song (‘If I had Words’) and as the theme tune for the movie Babe.

It’s also a concert that takes machines both musical and industrial as its inspiration: alongside the organ, it features Rachmaninov’s concerto, which pushes piano technique to a new extreme; and Honegger took inspiration for his symphonic poem Pacific 231 from steam locomotives.
