Noted as a gifted public speaker, Barry Coates was until recently the Executive Director for Oxfam New Zealand. Oxfam is a leading international non-governmental agency working to end poverty and injustice.

During his ten years at Oxfam, Barry led a number of campaigns and initiatives. He helped build the the fair trade movement in NZ. He initiated the Make Poverty History campaign in 2006, and is helping build the campaign on the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA). Climate change is a particular focus for Barry, having chaired the Global Campaign for Climate Action (the tcktck campaign). In New Zealand he led Oxfam during a period of rapid growth and strengthening, focusing on supporting our Pacific neighbours and helping to build a movement of New Zealanders to fight poverty and injustice. Barry intends to stand as a candidate for the Green Party in the next general election, now that he has concluded his time with Oxfam.

Barry’s time with Volunteer Service Abroad in Samoa sparked a lifelong commitment to the people and issues of the Pacific. Trained with degrees in economics and management, Barry has served on Ministerial Advisory Boards and remains active in the Sustainable Business Network.

In his first public visit to Palmerston North, he will speak on the topic of “Overcoming poverty and unsustainability: acting locally and globally” at 7.30 pm on Thursday 20 March in the City Library on the topics of climate, poverty, and justice.
