Katikati Folk Club hosts Kiwi balladeer and singing historian Phil Garland and singer and instrumentalist Margaret Harper.

Phil Garland, who now lives in Te Aroha, has spent a lifetime researching, collecting, writing and performing Kiwi songs, during which time he has been described as a national living treasure and New Zealand's foremost and finest heritage balladeer.
Phil has recorded some eighteen albums, winning Folk Album of the Year at the New Zealand Music Awards three times, as well as being a shortlisted finalist on three other occasions.
He has performed extensively around the world, promoting New Zealand’s musical heritage with a blended presentation of songs, ballads, stories and yarns that introduce audiences to the musical heart of New Zealand and its people.
Phil’s entertaining performance prompted one American reviewer to say: “His songs transport you to New Zealand so effectively, you may be inspired to take up residence there!”.

From a very early age, Margaret’s curiosity and farm-girl pragmatism have led her on a musical journey which she likens to an unending rabbit-hole of discovery. Her explorations have resulted in an eclectic collection of genres and musical instruments including harps, guitars, woodwind and percussion.

Margaret regularly performs as a soloist in the Tauranga region at various restaurants and private functions. She also plays concert harp and percussion with the Bay of Plenty Symphonia and occasionally with chamber groups. Her work as a community musician involves many hours a week providing musical entertainment and facilitating music groups.

Margaret will be performing a real mixed bag of songs and instrumentals on lever harp, guitar and vocals, including traditional folk songs from the British Isles and the Americas and also some Latin and jazz.
