Painless Processing Photo Workshop Series - Adobe Lightroom

As well as processing your images, part of having a good workflow is about culling, sorting and indexing your images in such a way that it doesn’t take up lots of time and energy or become a real chore. There is software available to help this process, known as DAM software (digital asset management), and of course there’s also software to help process your images too. This workshop in the Painless Processing series takes a closer look at Adobe Lightroom.

One of the reasons I like to use Adobe Lightroom is because it can do both very well. It has some excellent tools to help sort and organize your images and its RAW converter does an excellent job of processing RAW files, but it can also process jpegs and tiffs if you need to make more adjustments.

In this workshop I’ll start by looking at the Library Module. This is where all your images are sorted and tagged, and is where your workflow starts. I’ll then move on to the Development Module where all the adjustments and tools are available to help you process your images.
Some of you may shoot in RAW and some of you may shy away from it, as it seems too complicated, but it’s much easier to use than you may think. We will also discuss RAW and jpeg files – how much, will depend on the group and who’s using what.

Although this photography workshop is classroom based, we may also go out into the zoo to take some photos that we can work on, but this will be weather dependent.

As far as the logistics go for the workshop I’ll be using a projector, so you can follow everything I do as I navigate around Lightroom: having a laptop is not essential, but would certainly be beneficial especially if you want to work on some of your own images. If everyone within the group has a laptop, then you will definitely get the opportunity to work on some of your own images.
