The collection of pounamu nephrite jade cared for by the Hawke’s Bay Museums Trust, Ruawharo Tā-ū-rangi is rich in variation, both colour and pattern and in the range of taonga treasures that have been carved from this precious stone.

The discovery of pounamu sparked a technological and artistic revolution for Māori throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. Although it is only sourced from a few places deep in Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa’s South Island, it was very quickly traded up and down the country, demonstrating the strength of early Māori relationship networks and mobility.

Taonga on exhibition include some of these early tools, used to carve and decorate wood and also mere pounamu, both a weapon and a symbol of mana. There are over a hundred taonga which were worn to adorn and to remind us of our ancestral narratives, the most well-known of which are the hei tiki, carved in human form.

The majority of these pieces have not been on public display for a very long time and this is an exciting opportunity for MTG’s summer visitors.

Museum entry prices apply.

From 20 December 2014
