Although written whilst he was living in America, Dvořák's cello concerto is a deeply personal work that reflects his Slavic heritage. This was the last solo concert that Dvořák completed and it is characterised by lyrical and reflective melodies with an overriding sense of optimism and triumph.

Dvořák dedicated his cello concerto to his friend, fellow Czech, Hanuš Wihan. The piece was written in memory of Dvořák's sister in law, Josefina Kaunitsová however, whom he had been deeply in love with as a young man.

Currently one of the most prominent musicians in the Slovak musical scene, cellist Jozef Lupták makes his debut with the CSO to perform this famous composition. Born in Bratislava, Slovakia, Lupták is an award winning recording artist and performs as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe, Canada and the USA.

Considered his greatest symphonic masterpiece, Brahms' fourth symphony was composed over two summer vacations. This was his final symphony and achieves a perfect balance between reflection and exuberance.

When first reviewed after its premiere in 1884, a critic wrote "it is like a dark well; the longer we look into it the more brightly the stars shine back."

Josef Lupták appears through the generous assistance of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic.
