Northland Artist Sandra-Jane Suleski has presented an eclectic mix for her latest body of work entitled ‘The Gifts My Angels Gave Me’.

This year marks her 3rd annual exhibition here at South Sea Art Gallery. What previously was intended to be a one-off show, proved highly successful to locals and international visitors alike, it has now become an annual summer event in Russell.

The body of latest oil paintings continues along with her previous explorations of the angel and those of the emotional guise of ‘woman as icon’, but also encompasses her varying subject matter for the duration of 2014, introducing inspirations of The Geisha, Buddha and The Rusalki, traditional Slavic renditions of river dwelling naiads.

As always the concept behind Sandra-Jane’s work is to create and capture a detail of a larger experience outside the canvas. Each painting offers the viewer a personal invitation to extend their imagination beyond the canvas and determine their own greater context. The beauty lying within the viewer's own thoughts which become melded into the final picture, creating their own unique reality.

Inspired by the stability of the icon, throughout each theme, unchanging and ever-present, Sandra-Jane enjoys the restrictions of a limited palette for each work, enjoying the vibrancy and attention to detail and decoration akin to each particular piece.

Her inspirations within this collection include Russian and Byzantine iconography and Italian Renaissance Pastoral imagery, and the many writings of Kahlil Gibran.
