Auckland artists Gerry Copas and Paul Screach explore a world where both image and word jostle for attention

Gerry Copas is a text-based artist whose work investigates the relationship between the visual and verbal, the space and pace between letters and words. His hieroglyphic-like paintings require deciphering to decode what seems like a puzzle or a riddle inside.

Coming from a graphic design background, Copas has had a life-long interest in fine arts. He attended Elam School of Fine Arts in 2004, completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts in 2010.

The work of Paul Screach also revolves around the use and application of language. He is intrigued by the interaction between language and imagery, in a world where they are in a state of constant collision. He believes both play a role in our understanding of concepts.

Screach believes these experiences shaped his vocabulary, providing a rich source of linguistic content and visual reference. Thus a relationship formed: what has been seen cannot be unseen.

Seen.Unseen opens at 5.30pm Friday, May 23 and runs until June 10, 2014
