Baseland is a double-venue exhibition of compelling recent and new works by one of the biggest names in New Zealand art, Shane Cotton. Trained at the University of Canterbury’s School of Fine Arts, Cotton’s works have over the last half-decade become increasingly complex and provocative, incorporating a host of charged symbols and imagery.

His work evocatively includes both Māori iconography and culture, such as Toi moko (preserved tattooed ancestral heads), native birds such as tui, and European symbols and items. His paintings have explored questions of colonialism, cultural identity, Māori spirituality, and life and death.

Baseland brings home a selection from Christchurch Art Gallery’s celebrated Australasian touring exhibition, The Hanging Sky, combining major recent paintings with works made especially for the show, including a vast new mural-scale painting, a spectacular suite of "target" prints, and painted baseball bats that suggest both trophies and weapons.

The exhibition is being held at Christchurch Art Gallery’s temporary space at 209 Tuam Street, Christchurch (7 June–17 August), and Ilam Campus Gallery at the School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury (7 June–27 July).
