Stravinsky: The Soldier’s Tale: Suite
Ravel: Concerto for the Left Hand
Nielsen: Symphony No. 4, ‘The Inextinguishable’

A concert that presents three pieces permeated equally with the joy of life and the experience of battle. Stravinsky’s famous The Soldier’s Tale uses rhythmic and stylistic innovations to tell the Faustian tale of a soldier home from the war.

Ravel’s jazz-infused Concerto for the Left Hand, performed by Canadian pianist Avan Yu, was originally written for a soldier who had lost his right hand in World War I. Finally, Nielsen’s Fourth Symphony is subtitled ‘The Inextinguishable’, and portrays the fierce spirit of humanity. However, the battle is ever present, most noticeably in the duelling set of timpani in the finale.
