Within the context of song critiques, Jason will present tools and techniques that have proven successful in popular styles including current pop, country, singer/songwriter, adult contemporary, R&B, rock, and contemporary folk. You will learn what works - and doesn’t work - lyrically and melodically in your own song, and you will learn from listening and analysing others’ songs, as well. (Note: This will be an encouraging, supportive environment - but sharing your song is not required in order to attend.)

Interspersed between song critiques, you will work on guided creative exercises to help you write lyrics that connect to listeners’ hearts and melodies that are impossible to forget. You will learn how to incorporate specific, easy-to-learn techniques that are found in some of today's most successful songs. No musical training - or ability to play an instrument - is required for these exercises or to write successful songs!

Those who do not bring a song will have an opportunity to have one of their creative exercises critiqued. You will leave with several new songs started, and the tools to finish them. Come prepared to be inspired and to leave with the knowledge and skills needed to take your songs to the next level.

Jason draws on his exceptional songwriting success (more than 50 million albums sales) plus his insight and experience as a successful music publisher, record label executive and production coordinator to captivate and inspire audiences worldwide. He developed and has been teaching the BMI Songwriter Workshops for nineteen years, and has presented acclaimed masterclasses at Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and in locations including Australia, Jamaica, Canada, Norway, Ireland and throughout the U.S.

Author of three of the best-selling books on songwriting (Billboard Books), Jason is best known as Britney Spears’ first co-writer (and vocal producer) and one of the writers on the Backstreet Boys’ “Millennium” album. But his expertise extends far beyond pop music to encompass success in acoustic/roots; hard rock; R&B; country; positive/spiritual, and instrumental musical. Jason’s successes span the globe and include three Gold singles in Europe in the past year, and #1 EP in Japan.

As a current hit writer he is uniquely qualified to share practical experience in successfully writing and marketing songs, and placing them in top TV shows and movies (including “Scrubs,” Friday Night Lights,” and “Assassination Games.”)

Workshop topics will include:

Here’s a sample of the feedback received from last year’s New Zealand and Australia workshops:

- After recently spending a weekend with Jason Blume on his Six Steps to Songwriting Success workshop, all I can say is I wish I had done this six or seven years ago!! After day # 1, I went home and listened to a few of my 'work in progress' tracks and the lines that needed 'tweaking' instantly jumped out at me (both lyrically and melodically). Jason is an excellent teacher and communicator; he's approachable and really wants to help each and every songwriter reach their full potential. If you're serious about your craft you'd be nuts not to do this workshop!

- Jason’s systematic approach to covering the six steps that he believes are fundamental to a songwriter’s success combined with his energy and enthusiasm make for an unforgettable learning experience. He gives so much of himself to the process both as a writer and a teacher, making him the ideal mentor for aspiring writers.
