Hopkinson Smith (Switzerland/United States)

Fans of early music will relish this opportunity to see “the finest lute player in the world today” (San Francisco Chronicle).

As well as being a founding member of influential early music ensemble Hespèrion XX, Hopkinson Smith has spent much of his career focused on the solo repertoires for early plucked instruments and has produced a series of prize-winning recordings. For this special concert, Smith will play music for guitar by Francesco Guerau, Antonio de Santa Cruz and Gaspar Sanz. The programme will reflect a range of Spanish flavours – evocative tunes with the simplest of accompaniments through to stunning settings with driving rhythm and an unmistakably Iberian flavour.
