J.S. Bach’s St John Passion will be performed at 8 pm on Good Friday, April 18, 2014, in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, Manchester Street. Written for Good Friday in 1723, the Passion is a compact and intensely dramatic setting of St John’s description of Christ’s last hours.

The CBS Junior Choir will join the cathedral choir during the chorales, and soloists will be Elizabeth Emeleus, Ruth Reid, Wally Enright, David O’Beirne, Ken Joblin and Chris Whelan, with John Murray as the Evangelist. David Williams will lead the orchestra, with Ellen Doyle, cello, and Michael Lawrence, harpsichord, and the performance will be directed by Don Whelan. On Easter Sunday morning, the 10.30 a.m. Solemn Mass will include Handel’s Worthy Is The Lamb & Amen chorus, the Byrd motet Haec Dies, and Mozart’s Coronation Mass.

A Solemn Choral Mass is celebrated at 10.30 am each Sunday at St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, where the cathedral musicians continue to maintain an extensive repertoire of masses and motets. Pending decisions on the future of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, buildings are soon to be constructed in the Pro-Cathedral grounds to provide rehearsal, library and office spaces for the choirs and orchestra.

Further concerts for choir and orchestra are scheduled for June and September, and their annual performance of Messiah will be 2 pm, Sunday 14 December. Following their 2012 Asia tour, and a tour last year to Melbourne, they will travel this October to Napier and Hastings. Preparations are underway for travel during June / July 2015 to Ireland, England and Scotland. Those interested in travel as performers or supporters are invited to make contact.

New members are welcome to the 7.30 pm Wednesday evening rehearsal at Christchurch Boys’ High School. Sight reading ability is expected. A number of vacancies exist for choral leaders within the group, who enjoy unique opportunities to perform solo roles in significant Mass and motet settings with the orchestra and choir. Leadership awards, and other scholarships, worth up to $2000 per year, are available to suitable applicants. Those interested are invited to contact the CBS Musical Director, Don Whelan, phone 358-5873.
