The Storylines Festival Family Days are a breeding ground for this generation's Margaret Mahy or Joy Cowley, or indeed for the next Eleanor Catton! But more than that, they are the place where our children and their families and our authors, illustrators and storytellers share the magic of our stories, right here and now.

Roll up, roll up... Central Auckland Storylines Family Day approaches and have we got a fantastic day lined up for you! Join us in the Aotea Centre on Sunday 31st August from 10am – 3pm, for a fun-filled day of authors, illustrators, performers and plenty more book – based delights galore!

Join David Elliot, Stephanie Thatcher, Melissa Anderson – Scott, Sandra Morris, Nina Rycroft and Robyn Belton in our Artists in Action illustrators gallery. Get tips on creating your perfect pictures, and see how they create their brilliant work.

Authors including Mark Sommerset, Sharon Holt, Juliette MacIver, Jackie French and Kyle Mewburn will be bringing their books to life in our Scholastic Books Out Aloud zone, and Young Adult authors Gary Crew, David Hair, Cath Mayo and Sandy Mackay will be on hand for older story lovers.

Your family can get into the rhythm with Mr Roberelli, shiver your timbers with NZ'a ultimate rotten pirate entertainer Captain Festus McBoyle (master of music and mischief), along with Doctor Samuel Thickwickett and the infectious Ida Crumpet or check out PERFORM! Theatre. Also on stage will be Auckland school students will be sharing their interpretations of kiwi classics.

Make your own comics with Sarah Laing and Sophie Oiseau in our Comic Zone, operate a printing press with MOTAT or have your bookmark named using calligraphy. Join a multitude of story based art & craft activities throughout the day all over the venue, or whip up a word storm at our poetry picnic. Elena de Roo, Paula Green and Diane Newcombe will be leading fun activities to get your poetic juices flowing, and you can add your poems to our poet-tree.

Come on down to Pure Capital Thinking Factopia, a dedicated non-fiction zone to meet Little Cooks and Mister Scraps and find out about food with attitude. Learn about Kiwi Sports Stars and Maui dolphins with Maria Gill, and find out about Pacific Island life with Jill MacGregor. ANZAC themed activities will commemorate the sacrifices made by Kiwis and Australians in the 1st WW, as we, as a nation, remember them in this important centenary year.

The Heritage Hotels Book Talk zone will host fun discussions and debates with authors about their work, and new titles from Paula Green, Martin Baynton and Storylines Joy Cowley Award winner 2013 Aimee McNaughton will be unveiled at book launches.

You can also be in with a chance to win! You can enter on the day in our competition zone and we will also have on the spot prizes for fancy dress so come along as your favourite story characters!

So, with books, art, performance, competitions and facepainting ...and all for free, what is there not to love! Keep checking our facebook page for more details on the programme and more info on our special guests for the day.

Good luck and we hope to see you on the day! Prize giving is at 2.15pm on Sunday 31 August at the Auckland Family Day.
