Blow away those summer blues!

This Friday evening, St. Luke's Church will certainly be the place to go for a summer's musical experience with a trumpet and organ concert entitled Summer Serenade. The showcase of Summer Serenade, a concert given by trumpeter Bill Stoneham and organist Timothy Noon, will be the world premier of Summer Suite for trumpet and organ.

Written in 2009 by the American composer Greg Bartholomew, Summer Suite has already won several awards, including the 2013 Cheryl A. Spector Prize and third prize in the Third Millennium Ensemble's 2013 Composers Competition. The work, originally for trumpet and string quartet, has been re-worked by the composer for Bill and Timothy and its first public performances will be on the Summer Serenade tour right here in Rotorua, New Zealand.

This summer-inspired work, in three parts, aims to evoke moods and imagery of childhood summer experiences, such as the quiet stillness of a hot beach, a chase scene of frantic kids running after one another, the sense of childhood fun adventure and even the excitement of the ice-cream van. Even the titles of the three parts evoke imagery: Popsicle Rocket Sunrise, Still Life with Melon & Sand, and Red Cherry Lark.

The concert will also feature the organ solo Prelude and Fugue in A minor by J.S.Bach from the current director of music at Auckland's Holy Trinity Cathedral, Timothy Noon. Since moving to New Zealand in September 2011 Timothy has been busy having performed as a soloist with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and the Auckland Symphony Orchestra. He also serves on the boards of the Australia and New Zealand College of Organists and the New Zealand Choral Federation, is an examiner for the ABRSM and sings in several Auckland-based groups including V8 vocal ensemble.

Also on the programme is a rarely performed exquisite sonata from 17th century Italian composer Tomaso Albinoni. His Church Sonata in D minor (opus 6, number 4) was originally written for violin and organ but will be skilfully performed on trumpet by Bill Stoneham. As well as being the principal trumpet with the Bay of Plenty/Waikato Opus Orchestra, Bill is rapidly establishing himself as the country's most pre-eminent trumpet soloist. He now receives invitations to perform in centres both large and small throughout the country and is planing this year to tour to Australia and the UK.
