Originating in Harlem, New York, the lindy hop which is the main style of swing dancing became popular in the 1930s and 1940s along with the rise of the big band. Swing music was the pop music of the time with young people flocking to see and dance to their favourite bands and musicians. They became known as the Jitterbugs due to their erratic and passionate dancing.
Swing dance has been enjoying a worldwide revival since the early 1980s with swing dance schools being found in almost every major city in the world. In 1998, Jitterbugs opened its doors in Auckland and has been teaching swing dance to keen enthusiasts ever since.
