New Plymouth to buzz with 250 of the world’s best tattoo artists.

International television stars, models, burlesque performers and over 250 of the world’s best tattoo artists will be creating a real buzz at this year’s New Zealand Tattoo & Art Festival in New Plymouth from November 29 to 30.

Now in its fourth year and the largest tattoo event in Australasia, more than 8,000 visitors are expected to visit and book in for tattoos with tattoo artists from Europe, the United States, Australia, Japan, Malaysia and New Zealand.

Tattooing live at TSB Stadium, these contemporary and traditional tattoo artists will be in some cases finishing work they started on clients last year, or starting whole new designs, says event organiser, Brent Taylor.

“These tattoo artists are the best of the best so there is a huge prestige in having a tattoo from them,” says Brent.

A number of the tattoo artists are stars and judges in popular reality TV shows such as New York Ink, LA Ink, America’s Worst Tattoos and Best Ink which screen on channels right around the world.

“With 654,000 Facebook likes, a huge draw card will be tattoo artist Megan Massacre from TV shows New York Ink & America’s Worst Tattoos,” says Brent. “Petite, gorgeous and vivacious, Megan describes her artwork ‘as creepy yet cute - combining dark imagery with bold vibrant color to create a unique, whimsical style’.”

Also super popular with ink fans is Kiwi ex-pat Dan Smith. A star of the hit TV show LA Ink, Dan has been living and inking in Los Angeles since the early 2000s. And the TV tattoo celebrity list goes on including Teresa Sharp, winner of Best Ink season 2, and Joe Capobianco who was head judge on all three seasons of Best Ink.

“This year’s line-up of celebrity, contemporary and traditional tattooists will literally have New Plymouth buzzing,” says Brent. “While virtually all use modern tattoo equipment, observing traditional artists such as Japan’s Horimasa or Samoan Lawrence Ah Ching using centuries’ old techniques is a cultural experience to be appreciated.”

The world’s premiere black & grey tattoo artists Carl Grace is travelling down under for the first time from LA, says Brent.

“Carl’s attendance is a massive coup - his unique free hand tattoo style really sets him apart from his peers,” says Brent.

Being held at TSB Stadium, the Festival also has two full days of entertainment from local & international acts.

Demon Energy Freestyle Motocross Madness shows featuring death-defying aerial moves by professional FMX riders including Mitch McHardy who toured the world with the legendary Crusty Demons.
Direct from Hollywood, Mexico Food & Liquor presents the titillating Pretty Things Peepshow, a vintage burlesque circus specializing in acts of the beautiful & bizarre. Making a guest appearance for her legions of fans will be Radeo Suicide from America.

London-based fire dancer & model Cervena Fox will be performing both days along with two hugely popular local burlesque performers Venus Star and Bonita Dangerdoll.

On the music front, former New Plymouth hip hop artist Louie Knuxx is returning to perform along with Auckland rock band Ekko Park hot from a tour of Ireland. Skaters will compete for $2000 in prizes on a purpose-built half pipe sponsored by ALC apparel.

“We hope to announce a great lineup of custom cars and bikes for the Fowler Homes Show N Shine as well,” says Brent.

The Festival will open its doors from 11am until 10pm on Saturday, November 29, and from 11am until 7pm on Sunday, November 30. Entry is $20 a day for adults with under 15 year-olds free (accompanied by an adult), two day passes are $35.
