Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music holds a weekly lunchtime concert series during trimesters 1 and 2.
In this concert in the NZSM Lunchtime series Norman Meehan (piano), Blair Latham (saxophone / clarinet) and Paul Dyne (bass) perform music composed by Jimmy Giuffre and (more recently) by Norman Meehan.

In the late 1950s saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre began performing with trios that excluded a drummer - an unusual move for jazz. The music that resulted rarely grooved as hard as the mainstream jazz of the day, but the more transparent textures of these performances admitted greater melodic and harmonic clarity. The music was also fairly quiet. This lower dynamic and relative transparency, coupled with Giuffre's inquisitive musicality (along with collaborators of a similarly experimental disposition) saw his trio suggest a number of performance strategies that remain fruitful for musical inquiry more than 50 years later.

Harmonically open music that invites improvised interactivity within the group is a hallmark of all Guiffre's mature work and it is these values (and some of his compositions) that we celebrate in this concert.
