Playing guitar and dulcimer, the occasional fiddle and singing is the activity that reminds me who I am. Training at 18 in the skills of the garment industry has served me well in many forms through the years. But when I come home after a stressful day and sit with the dulcimer on my lap I am reminded that this is where my heart is, where the comfort of the notes combining and the rhythms, surprising but steady, bring me to peace. That is what I like to share in a performance through songs of love and life, winning and losing, family and friendship, cowboy boots and chocolate! The addition of friends adding extra strings and harmonies is part of the tradition and the pleasure. I am so pleased to be joined at Titirangi by my friend Emily Giles playing lovely cello and singing.

Born in the USA and raised in a family of musicians has given me a varied experience of music. My father was a conductor of choral and symphonic music and opera. He could play any instrument in an orchestra and was a teacher most his life. My mother directed church choirs and played piano. In her choir as a teenager I learned to sing the alto parts or the harmonies. My cousins sang 4 part gospel and old time American traditional songs accompanied by my Uncle Fred on guitar. The house was often filled with music practices. Wasn’t every house like that? And who knew I would eventually appreciate those 8 years of violin lessons? Then there was the 60’s and my first guitar.

In the early 70’s my OE from California brought me to New Zealand where I have lived happily ever since, becoming a citizen in the 90’s. My first dulcimer was loaned to me by a family from Oregon who were settled in Nelson. Music has given me opportunities to travel both islands to perform at folk clubs and festivals, record my music now on two CD’s, play with wonderful musician friends in several groups, perform on radio and television and best of all just jamming around the tent at festivals.
