From the end of May until mid-June, nearly 10,000 New Zealand secondary school students from Whangarei to Invercargill will be gathering in their choirs to sing in The Big Sing 2014 - eleven Regional Festivals organised by the New Zealand Choral Federation.

More than 250 choirs from 150 schools are taking part in festivals in Northland, Auckland, Waikato-Bay of Plenty, East Coast, Manawatu-Wanganui, Taranaki, Wellington, Marlborough-Nelson, Canterbury-West Coast, Otago, and Southland. Each choir will present a varied 10-minute programme that
includes a New Zealand composition and two other items, and many regional awards will be presented at each regional Gala Concerts.

The three regional adjudicators, will each judge the festivals in their assigned area, and then meet on 21 June to select the twenty-four top choirs. These choirs will attend The Big Sing National Finale being staged this year in Auckland, from 21-23 August. The list of successful choirs will be announced on 23 June.

At the National Finale, the choirs will present two choral programmes of varied repertoire, and these will be judged by a Finale adjudicator panel. Free lunchtime recitals will be held around Auckland during the Finale for members of the public to enjoy. The final special event will be a Gala Concert in the Auckland Town Hall on 23 August, featuring all the choirs and showcasing the music performed over the three days of the Finale. Tickets for this exciting event will be available through an announced ticketing Agency.

New Zealand can be proud of its choral achievements, and especially of the enthusiasm and support for all choirs evident at The Big Sing 2014. Many of these school choristers go on to join NZ national choirs and these often win awards at prestigious international choral competitions.
