Western Zen Master Richard Baker once remarked, “Had I known the Gospel of Thomas, I wouldn’t have had to become a Buddhist”. The Gospel of Thomas is an unruly collection of early Christian wisdom sayings, comparable for their pithy and incisive observations with the magisterial wit of Zen koans. In these ancient texts, ordinary reality is transformed, and the viewing self is liberated in ways that more resemble Eastern concepts of ‘Enlightenment’ than traditional Western ideas of doctrinal correctness.

Early enough to be a contender for ‘Q’; credible enough for the Jesus Seminar to think it held more weight than the Gospel of John; exotic enough to be endorsed by Zen; scandalous enough to be a ‘bad boy’ text in conspiracy stories like The Da Vinci Code and films like Stigmata, the Gospel of Thomas is a bracing confrontation with a Jesus so far not taught in churches – anywhere.
If this text was taken remotely seriously within the mainstream, the beliefs of the traditional church would turn abruptly inside out. Test your critical fingers on the cutting edge of a rehabilitating Christianity.

This four week course will encompass readings from the Gospel of Thomas. Facilitated by Andrew Rockell.
