Exactly 230 years ago, Beaumarchais’ comedy The Marriage of Figaro, which was to inspire Mozart’s famous opera, was performed for the very first time in Paris.

To celebrate this anniversary, Victoria University’s French Society offers four wonderful performances of the play: you are all invited to seize this unique opportunity to see the famous comedy performed in Wellington!

The entry is by koha so that everyone can enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Our cast is truly international, with talented professional and non-professional actors from New Zealand, France, Belgium and the UK.

The play also features a number of songs and dances performed by musicians and dancers who have achieved a level of recognition on New Zealand stages (Wellington’s Fringe Festival, tours in the South Island…).

Our venue is the beautiful Memorial Theatre (360 seats), conveniently located on Victoria University's Kelburn campus, just 5 minutes from the city centre.

The play is performed in its original language (French) with subtitles projected over the stage so that everyone can truly enjoy the show. The very lively and physical acting of our cast also guarantees the enjoyment of all, whether you understand French or not.

Each show will last about 1h20. No bookings required (however, if you are planning to come as a group of more than 15 people, don't hesitate to send us an email on one of the addresses below).

One of the directors supported a similar project in 2012 as part of the Fulbright FLTA program in Oregon (USA). The play had attracted the attention of the media on the other side of the continent, with the publication of an article in the magazine France-Amérique, which is based in New York City: (pictures were taken during a rehearsal and do not reflect the show itself).

For more information, please do not hesitate to email one or both of the following addresses:,

We hope to see you all at the Memorial Theatre between May 14 and May 17,

“Bonjour” and "Merci" from the cast of The Marriage of Figaro! :)
