Toast an exhibition with a community focus on Whitireia visual arts and design.

Toast is an annual celebration of graduate works from the Whitireia Bachelor of Applied Arts programme. Best creative works from each media will come together at Bottle Creek gallery at Pataka Museum of Arts and Culture in November as a showcase for community, local businesses and public art followers.

This year’s exhibition reflects the community focus shared by both Whitireia and Pataka Museum of Arts and Cultures. In 1990 the original Porirua arts gallery first promoted Whitireia student talent to the Porirua community. Since then relationships have deepened with Pataka staff as a significant resource led by Helen Kedgely and Whitireia graduates employed by the gallery and Porirua City Council. Whitireia alumni Kivani Moriarty and Margaret Tolland among many others have remained a key part of the wider network for students to practice their art education and making skills.

Twenty four arts degree graduates will show their talents in design, animation, contemporary jewellery, eco sustainable textiles, printmaking and photography run by the Photo School at Raumati ; works will be for sale. During 2014 year 3 and graduate diploma students have presented either a solo show or design project to their stakeholders in selected regional galleries and spaces relevant to their research themes. Several of this year’s students have received accolades and awards in national craft design and photography competitions. Further awards and scholarship winners will be announced at the opening of the Toast exhibition, from sponsors Mana Zonta, Toi Poneke, Resene and the Julie Obren award for a student returning to studies in 2015, this award is named after the former arts curator for Page 90 gallery.

We are confident that each graduate has shown skills relevant to a contemporary arts and design context received with high calibre mentoring from practising artists said Deb Donnelly, Programme Manager Visual Arts and Design at Whitireia. “Whitireia staff and Bottle Creek curator Martha Van Drunen have worked with this team of students to produce an exhibition worthy of the next generation of New Zealand artists launching their careers in Visual Arts and Design.”

Toast opens on Friday 14 November at Bottle Creek Gallery, Pataka Museum of Arts and Cultures, Corner Norrie and Parumoana Street, Porirua at 6.30pm. The exhibition runs from 15 November – 14 December 2014, Monday - Friday 10am to 4.30pm and Saturday – Sunday 10 – 4pm.
