Last Few Days - come and view

Tyrone Layne has not only proved he possesses the ability to carry through a concept to a successful conclusion; he has proved emphatically he can paint on a large scale. In 2011 he completed a major triptych of Point Chevalier Beach which now hangs in an Auckland home. He has followed that accomplishment with a large diptych this year, that must have seemed somewhat less daunting – “Incoming Tide, Mission Bay Beach”. Here an Auckland summer is in full swing - bathers in the sea, some strolling towards the water’s edge and stand-up paddle boarders are tentatively underway as a surf-sailor steadies his sail east toward Browns Island. Auckland’s mottled clouds drift across the Waitemata Harbour towards the Coromandel. It is these nuances Layne so observantly records.

Other paintings in this new exhibition depict similar everyday urban scenes, some more intensely populated such as “Intoxicated City”, “Armed Robbers” (Queen Street), and “The Year 2064” (Wellesley Street). These paintings are not just snap-shot scenes of everyday life as things may not appear as they seem at first glance, particularly in the case of “Armed Robbers” and “The Year 2064”. There is a great deal of planning, time and intense concentration evident here to produce the sum of the parts or the final product. While Layne’s brushwork is more workmanlike than expressive, no one can doubt his ability to produce the default setting for an idyllic New Zealand summer beach scene. Our beaches, climate and environment are things we no longer take for granted but no one will mind the artist throwing us a timely reminder nevertheless.
