Bernd Glemser has won no less than seventeen international music competitions, was the youngest professor to be appointed at a German university and has made over thirty critically acclaimed recordings. It is a great privilege for the CSO to welcome this outstanding pianist as our guest soloist for this concert.

Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2 is a monumental work that places considerable demands on the soloist. An exploration of human struggle and happiness, this concerto found immediate favour with critics and audiences alike following its first performance.

Bartók's exuberant Concerto for Orchestra was his last completed orchestral work. This virtuosic tour de force reflects his Hungarian heritage, incorporating folk based melodies and rhythms. In keeping with one of the central themes of the 2014 Lamb and Hayward Masterwork series, the Concerto for Orchestra concludes with a triumphant and optimistic finale.
