This popular introductory course offers you the opportunity to study about wine, viticulture, wine making, and matching food with wine. It focuses on the main wine varietals grown in New Zealand and the styles of wine that have built their reputations.

You will look at the European traditions that have influenced New Zealand winemaking as well as the winemaking process. You will learn how to taste and evaluate wines and the principles that underscore food and wine matching. The course includes WSET Level 1, which delivers the basic product knowledge and skills required in the service and retail of wine. The program is also an excellent introduction for the wine enthusiast who wants to learn more about wine styles, storage, service, and matching the perfect wine with food. Each class includes a wine tasting session.

This programme provides a comprehensive foundation of general wine knowledge, including:
- Principal grape varieties
- How to taste and evaluate wine
- Overview of key international wine regions
- Understanding of New Zealand wine regions
- Winemaking techniques
- Vineyard practices
- Sparkling wine
- Service and storage of wines
- Styles of wine
* includes a day trip winery tour to Waiheke Island

Qualifications gained:
- NZSFW Certificate in Wine
- NZQA unit standards (22912, 23060, 4637)
- WSET Level 1 Award in Wined
