Mrs. Robert Fortune cordially invites you to join her for afternoon tea. As her husband is currently away, Mrs. Fortune hopes that you might join her to ease the boredom of staying at home alone. Guests may have the additional pleasure of having their tea leaves read, as Mrs. Fortune has recently taken up this most entertaining pursuit.

Mrs. Fortune and her guests will be hosted by Martha's Pantry on Thursday the 5th and Friday the 6th of March, and by Arthur's on Saturday the 7th of March. Guests are encouraged to pre-order Martha's Famous High Tea if they wish. Regular tea will be provided at both venues.

Robert Fortune was a gardener, botanist and agent for the East India Company. As their employee, he entered China and stole the tea stock that would eventually populate the Himalayan foothills of India and led to such revered tea varieties as Darjeeling. One of the first Europeans to travel so far into the interior of China, he faced danger from brigands, pirates and even his own servants on his botanical escapades. He also brought back an astounding array of plants besides tea, including night-blooming jasmine, roses and many others.

Meanwhile, back at home, his wife Jane tended to their garden, the accounts, and their children. In this entertaining and immersive theatre experience Jane will speak about her side of the story, while chatting over a cuppa. Her topics include the history of tea, British colonialism, the effect of tea on the household, the proper way to brew a cup of tea, and amusing anecdotes about her husband's travels. It will be an entertaining brew of colonialism, history, botany, theft, and espionage. Sugar?
