Robert Schumann’s emotional Piano Quartet, one of the jewels of his so-called ‘chamber music year’ of 1842, takes centre stage in this summer’s evening concert. As if the yearning cello theme of the slow movement weren’t enough already to make this a perfect piece, Schumann gives us moments of drama, majesty, poignancy and nervous excitement as well. A sonata by the French Baroque cellist Jean Barriere is the wistful and breezy opener for the soirée, and we close with the Allegro from the Trio by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakoff, composer of the beloved orchestral tone poem Scheherazade.

Jean Barriere
Sonata no. 2 for cello and Basso continuo in g Minor

Robert Schumann
Quartet for piano and strings in Eflat Major op.47

Nicolai Rimsky Korsakoff
Trio, Allegro

Joanna Park, cello
Douglas Mews, harpsichord
Tasana Nagavajara, violin
Serenity Thurlow, viola
Edith Salzmann, cello
Caroline Almonte, piano

The International Akaroa Music Festival concert series:
I am delighted to introduce our 2015 International Akaroa Music Festival programme.

Between 9-25 January we will be presenting a series of wonderful concerts featuring distinguished national and international artists as well as performances by some of New Zealand’s most talented young musicians.

If you have attended previous festivals in beautiful Akaroa you will know how exciting it is to see our guest artists inspire and stimulate a new generation of young musicians. If you have not experienced this unique festival of music making before you have a wonderful treat in store.
