What is it about the past that intrigues us so?

Award-winning novelist and screenwriter Debra Daley has set her two most recent novels in the 18th century (Turning the Stones, 2014, and The Hidden Hand, forthcoming) of England and India, while Mei-Lin Hansen draws on her Maori and Chinese heritage for The Mooncake and the Kumara, her debut play which is being performed at the festival.

In this conversation they talk about the demands of historical fiction, family secrets, identity, the meaning of home and the differences in writing for the stage and page.
