Set in old Salem, Massachusetts in the late 1600s, "The Crucible" is a savage attack on the evils of mindless persecution and the terrifying power of false accusations. Rigid religious and moral views contribute to a small community's downfall when a young girl and her friends accuse innocent people who have slighted them of performing witchcraft. The selfish cruelty of the girls' behaviour, and the eagerness of the community's leaders to rule with fear and violence, sparks widespread hysteria and a rampage of personal vendettas. A haunting tale of superstition, paranoia, malice, and lust, "The Crucible" is a partially fictionalised documentation of one of the strangest and most awful chapters in human history.

Written by Arthur Miller
