Local artist Nathan Pohio (Te Hapū o Nga Te Wheke, Te Hapū o Ngāi Tūāhuriri, and the tribes Waitaha, Kāti Mamoe and Kāi Tahu) will discuss his inspiring new work for SCAPE 8. Investigating early exchanges between Māori and European settlers in the Christchurch area, Pohio came across a rare
and striking 1905 photograph taken at Tuahiwi Pā, Kaiapoi, of a meeting between local Ngāi Tūāhuriri people and the then Governor General of New Zealand, Lord Plunket. Hear about how the artist has worked with this historic image and how revisiting old memories and forgotten stories can help us anchor ourselves and reconnect to the changing face of Christchurch.
