Every Sunday afternoon throughout the Auckland Heritage Festival, the New Zealand Maritime Museum will be hosting special narrated sailings at 2pm.

Beloved museum guides, Greta and Alf Fisher will be giving the commentary on the history of the harbour all Aucklanders know and love. Greta and Alf have been guides at the museum for 5 years, and Alf’s previous 18 years working for the Auckland Harbour Board has provided the couple with a wealth of maritime knowledge to share.

The tours are a chance for passengers to ask our guides about subjects and places they’re interested in, and Greta and Alf will draw on a range of fascinating stories that feature along the Harbour’s waterfront, such as the history of scows and the museum’s own Ted Ashby, the original Auckland shoreline, the Victorian history of Ponsonby, the cement wharf, the slipway, Westhaven and the changes around Wynyard Quarter. They’ll be sure not to forget the history on the other side of the harbour too, acknowledging the fascinating life of the iconic Chelsea Sugar Factory, Devonport, the Navy Base and Bayswater, where the Kiwi hero, Sir Peter Blake grew up learning to sail.

The journey and relaxed conversation-style guided tour is sure to engage everyone, from those that know Auckland well, to those who are the newest to the city.

It's a good idea to pre-book your ticket, although remaining spaces will be available for purchase from the Museum shop on the day.
