As part of Auckland's Heritage Festival, the businesses in Village of Birkenhead, home of New Zealand's only sugar factory is celebrating with Chelsea Sugar and the local Kaipatiki Board, by bringing back the Chelsea Clydesdale Horses for families to ride for free on nominated festival days, (usual cost $10 per person per ride). The Clydesdales were the breed selected by the Sugar Factory as they can pull up to their own weight behind them that made them perfect for transporting the sugar bags off the barges to the Sugar Factory. The ride does a historic loop around Highbury the Birthplace of Commerce (1920) and along the original roads on the ridge which were also rutted out by the horses as a key part of the areas infrastructure.

Come into the Village and celebrate with us our unique place in Auckland's history by riding the horses.
