Howick Little Theatre is holding auditions for the drama “Birthrights” by David Williamson. It will be directed by Nick Martin.

This is a bittersweet play about Motherhood. Williamson has written a script with realism concerning a serious subject. The story deals with two sisters, Helen and Claudia. Helen, the conservative, suburban wife of Mark, a businessman, is infertile and desperately wants a baby. Claudia offers to bear a baby fathered by Mark out of love for her older sister. She does so despite the interruption to her career as a lefty lawyer, potential damage to her relationship with Martin, and her own lack of interest in children. What transpires is years of competing for the love of Kelly, the daughter. Their radical lawyer mother, Margaret, mediates the sibling rivalry.

As the play covers a time period of 18 years, Nick will be looking to cast the four central characters within the 35- to 50-year-old range. For Margaret, 60-plus.

Characters
Helen – suburban, conservative, comfortable with her life role as wife of a wealthy businessman.
Mark – conservative, controlling husband to Helen.
Claudia – sophisticated, career driven with a heart to “do the right thing”.
Martin – an artist, self absorbed, lefty.
Margaret – radical lawyer likely to take up the cause of the day
Kelly – conflicted daughter of Helen and Claudia. Vulnerable yet aware beyond her age; 18 years old.

- Rehearsals begin on Sunday, May 24, at 7.00pm and will run on the following Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7.30pm and Sundays at 7.00pm.
- The season runs from Saturday, July 11, to Saturday, August 1, for a total of 16 performances.
