Barbara Chapple presents a suite of new works in the Annex gallery referencing Waiheke and nearby locations.

Her interest is in people and social situations.

She takes her own photographs which she uses as a starting point. As she simplifies and re-arranges the figures, a painting emerges. The figures are enlarged or reduced and moved around until there is a pleasing arrangement which draws attention to the main elements. Sometimes there is some kind of overt or implied social commentary, sometimes it is even political.

The blank faces make the people anonymous. This is deliberate – the statements being made could apply to any group of people. Emphasis is on body language.

The large paintings feature several or many people. A recent development is to isolate small sections of those paintings to create semi-abstact studies.
Colour is a major element in Barbara’s work. She loves bright colours, and enjoys using acrylic paints on a simple board base.
Barbara came late to painting, having a background in teaching and fabric crafts. She has attended classes at Matthew Browne School of Art for the past three years. Prior to that she enjoyed studying through The Learning Connexion
