This workshop presents some easy ways to improve your pronunciation of te reo Māori using simple childrens’ songs and other easy techniques to give you the confidence to speak and teach this beautiful language. This workshop is suitable for anyone who would like to improve their pronunciation skill level and learn how to introduce te reo Māori sentence structure games to children.

Pat One: Basic te reo Māori pronounciation
Participants will be able to correctly pronounce New Zealand’s place names, people’s names and te reo Māori words in common usage. An easy 5 point plan will break Māori pronunciation down in a way that can be easily understood by anyone – no matter what their ethnicity. Participants will practice their Māori pronunciation in a fun and accepting environment with simple games and songs.

Part two: simple te reo Māori sentence structure
This part of the workshop will extend the participants knowledge of simple te reo Māori sentence structures and how they can be used with children of all ages in the teaching of te reo Māori. The workshop uses props, games and songs to help participants to extend their use of te reo Māori beyond greetings, commands, colours and numbers.

About Sharon:
Sharon Holt has been a children’s book author for more than 15 years. Her background is in teaching and journalism and her Te Reo Singalong series was inspired while she learnt te reo Māori. Sharon realised that many teachers lacked confidence in using the Māori language in their classroom. Also, there weren’t many resources available to help teachers and children learn basic te reo sentence structure. Her workshops also help teachers to gain confidence in their pronunciation and learn some sentence structure games to play with children.
