The Central City Library is holding an event to celebrate the launch of The Dreaming Land, written by Martin Edmond and published by Bridget Williams Books.

Martin Edmond was the recipient of the 2015 Michael King Fellowship and the 2013 Prime Minister's Award for Literary Achievement in Non-fiction. The Dreaming Land is his first full-length memoir, building on the long essay Barefoot Years, published as part of the BWB Texts series in 2014.

With the evocative prose that makes him one of our finest writers, Martin Edmond recalls his experiences of growing up in rural New Zealand in the 1950s and 60s.

The son of schoolteachers, Edmond’s early life was shaped by his father’s developing career and the moves it dictated; from Ohakune, to Greytown, to Huntly, to Heretaunga.

The Dreaming Land shows us the making of a thinker and a writer. Edmond documents not only the people, locations, and events that made a lasting impression on him, but also maps the development of his mental landscape – a terrain marked by curiosity, by empathy, and by the capacity for acute observation.

Joining Martin Edmond to discuss The Dreaming Land and its inception will be Peter Simpson, freelance writer and former Associate Professor of English at Auckland University.

Bookings are recommended for this event. To reserve your place call (09) 890 2443 or email
