As early as 1854, New Zealand’s premier, James Fitzgerald, suggested that “the General Assembly should be held in a more central position in the colony”, but it wasn’t until 1865 that the capital finally moved from Auckland. 26 July 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of Wellington as New Zealand’s capital city. This course explores Maori and Pakeha perspectives of the capital’s social, economic and political history and the context of its move.
