Chris Abrahams plays solo on Michael Parekowhai's piano installation 'He kōrero pūrākau mo te awanui o te motu: Story of a New Zealand River' as part of the Black Rainbow Concert Series at Te Uru.

Abrahams hails from Sydney but was born in Oamaru. He is best known as one third of the Australian avant garde jazz band The Necks. He has recorded several solo albums as well as many collaborations including four releases with Melanie Oxley from the Sparklers. He has also been a session musician on albums for artists such as The Church, The Whitlams, Midnight Oil, Wendy Matthews, Skunkhour and Silverchair.

His refined approach to improvisation is described as “…letting the music take on a life of its own, guiding it to the start of its journey, and allowing it to bloom into something beyond its constituents — to evolve from its own creator’s history, one’s “memories,” and into its own harrowingly compelling being.”

"..Abrahams relentless and steady patterning started to metamorphose the nature of the piano, the upper chords sounding like a distant locomotive hoot, and then an accordion weaving in and out of a shimmering bank of flutes." - The Wire, UK
