On the evening of the 14th November 1940 the 14th century St Michael’s Cathedral in the centre of Coventry was almost completely destroyed by Luftwaffe bombing. A little over 22 years later Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem was premiered to mark the re-consecration of a new cathedral built adjacent to the ruins of the original.

The War Requiem reflects Britten’s deeply held pacifist and humanitarian beliefs, weaving nine poems of the World War I poet, Wilfred Owen, amongst the setting of the traditional Latin Missa pro Defunctis. The resulting composition is a work of profound emotional and moral depth that has become regarded as one of the great choral works of the 20th century.

We are delighted to present this performance in association with the Christchurch City Choir.
