About Aroha

Appearing regularly in our series, the Aroha Quartet joins us again in 2015 to celebrate 10 years of music-making in a performance featuring Douglas Lilburn’s Quartet in E minor, framed by Haydn’s “Joke” Quartet and Beethoven’s String Quartet op. 59 no.3. Haydn’s “Joke” Quartet is named after its humorously-conceived final movement, which subverts the rondo form in the composer’s typically brilliant fashion. Beethoven’s quartet is representative of the composer’s epic and romantic style of struggle and triumph, with many fascinating musical detours throughout.

The Aroha Quartet was formed in 2004 from members of the NZSO and is committed to presenting string quartet works from traditional Chinese folk music to western classical and avant-garde repertoire, as well as works for larger forces through collaborations with numerous national and international high-profile musicians.
