Join Auckland War Memorial Museum in commemorating the Battle of Chunuk Bair, a defining stand during the Gallipoli campaign of the First World War.

A series of special events will begin with a commemoration service presented by Auckland Council, followed by a presentation of ANZAC images by the Museum's Pictorial Curator Shaun Higgins. The afternoon will explore contemporary and historical responses to war - through poetry, waiata, haka, and theatre.

Chunuk Bair Commemoration Service

Auckland Council will present a commemoration service at Auckland War Memorial Museum to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle for Chunuk Bair.

Watch as Massive Nui Ensemble presents a series of heartfelt theatrical responses to ideas around war. How do these provocations lead them to think and respond to life? Massive is a theatre company for emerging and professional actors; the company performs work that springboards from authentic stories and real people, and bears real emotions.

An Inside View of Gallipoli

Hear from the Museum's Pictorial Curator Shaun Higgins, as he presents images from the Museum's collections. The images feature in the book, The Anzacs - An Inside View of New Zealanders at Gallipoli, and are a true account captured by those who experienced the war first hand.

Killing Pieces

Explore contemporary responses to war in this special collaboration between poet Jerry Beale and musician Eddie Giesen. Witness intimate confronting poems, based on Jerry's experience as a soldier, with an accompanying electronic soundscape designed to reflect the raw emotional landscape of war.

Many special songs were written by Māori during the First World War - songs for recruitment, songs to farewell troops, welcome-home songs and songs for grieving. Join a group of talented young performers from Auckland's secondary schools as they come together to commemorate Chunuk Bair 100 Years On through waiata and haka.
