In the era of meet-ups and social media, Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision, AUT and Colab present an amusing look back at the societies and clubs that have enriched social lives in Aotearoa New Zealand over the last century.

The compilation programme of film and TV gems from the archives opens in rugged southern alpine ranges, where Tainui Robins and other Canterbury Mountaineering Club members hoon around the Arthur’s Pass region in their motorcars in 1938 - 1940. The 8mm film features a witty commentary recorded by Robins decades later, in the 1970s.

Another highlight of the hour-long programme is a 1968 segment on Auckland's Connoisseurs Club. The entire club (totalling over 1,700 members) takes a rail outing to the vibrant Wine Festival and Corban’s Vineyard in Henderson.

An episode of the NZBC television series "Survey" (1971) also features, with poet and raconteur Dennis Glover introducing a range of weird and wonderful community groups and clubs formed by New Zealanders. These include: Jaycees, Rotary, Soroptimists, Lions, the Gentlemen’s Club, the Wellesley Club, Working Men’s Club, RSA, Gallipoli Veterans, a school reunion group, The Folded Wings Club of ex-air hostesses, the Accordionist Society, the Cactus and Succulent Society, the Wellington Society of Magicians, the Inventors Association, the Wellington branch of the Flying Saucer club, Ngāti Poneke Club, and more. It includes footage of men socialising in a sauna, amateur dramatics, and ballroom dancing.
