In this special annual event, NZSM celebrates Dr. Jack C. Richards' support of the Creative New Zealand/Jack C. Richards Composer-in-Residence scheme at Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music, with a short concert featuring music by the incoming and outgoing composers. A light reception follows the concert.

David Long was the 2014-2015 Composer-in-Residence. During his tenure he collaborated with a diverse range of professional musical groups in Wellington, and mentored NZSM students interested in film music composition, a field in which David has considerable expertise and experience. John Elmsly, the incoming composer and a celebrated figure in New Zealand composition, is the 12th composer to hold this position jointly funded by Creative New Zealand and Dr Jack C. Richards. This evening, Kamala Bain will perform Elmsly’s MicroTungwhorl (2015) for tenor recorder and electronic sounds, and young piano students of Mary Barber and Gillian Bibby will perform a short selection of his pieces from the Sunrise and Take Flight albums. David Long will perform with his group The Labcoats, who recorded and released an album as part of Long’s residency.

The event is open to the public but we ask, for catering purposes, that you register your intention to attend with composition@nzsm.ac.nz by 5pm August 4.
