Conversations With the Found
Hannah Riley
5th-31st January 2015

Inherent to my practice is a process of collection and manipulation of found materials. These organic objects convey the instability of physical and categorical boundaries. Central to my work are ideas of proximity, containment, contamination and flux. The composite and porous forms speak to the permeable and constructed nature of the self/ body/object.

I am interested in drawing attention to the skin of an object. Skin is a receptive and regulatory surface, enabling the exchange of information or substance. Exchanges that occur not only between the interior of an organism or cell and the surrounding environment, but also the transaction between the viewer and object/image. “Neither the perceiver nor the perceived is wholly passive in the event of perception”. Coming into contact with a surface through touch, or the gaze, is a process of internalising an other. Although these objects are in an arrested state of motion, they become animated through this exchange. Webs, hair and quills are fragments of a body that neither belong entirely to one category or its ‘opposition.’ They oscillate between interior and exterior, growth and inertia, the familiar and estranged, inviting the viewer to question their own proximity and position in relation to these borders.
