Surge (Chopin • Hamilton • Saint-Saens)
Performed by Justine Cormack (violin), Ashley Brown (cello), and Sarah Watkins (piano)

We have a rare treat in store in Whitianga on the Friday night of the Scallop Festival and, no, it’s not scallops: NZTrio will perform their masterfully curated programme, SURGE, designed to tousle, soothe and excite! Polish and French composers Chopin and Saint-Saens are the artisan bread in this proverbial sandwich, wrapping an exciting new commission by New Zealand's David Hamilton in the middle like glorious homemade preserve. Come feast with us!

The evening kicks off with Frederic Chopin’s Piano Trio in g minor, Opus 8. Chopin’s only Piano Trio is a dramatic and passionate piece written before he even reached 20 years of age! Following this is a fresh-out-of-the-wrapping new commission titled The Faraday Cage, by Napier-born David Hamilton. Better known for his choral compositions, this beautiful work responds to the idea of sparks and electric current running around the surface of an object. The final hurrah for the evening is a work by the legendary Camille Saint-Saens. Composed in his prime; Piano Trio No.2, Opus 92 promises to charm and transport audiences.

AnNZTrio treat on Friday night; and the Scallop Festival treat the next day - who could wish for more?
