High profile alcohol harm reduction campaigner, Dr Paul Quigley, will talk on ‘Using One Injury to Prevent Another - Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention in emergency departments' in Motueka on Friday 18 September.

In Wellington emergency medicine specialist, and high profile alcohol harm reduction campaigner, Dr Quigley, has helped create an alcohol screening programme for people who present to A&E with injuries.

If alcohol has played a part, patients then undergo further screening establishing the risk level of harm and a brief intervention programme happens.

The demographic data arising from the alcohol screening is collated and then shared with Regional Public Health. It can then be used to map where the alcohol was bought and consumed and where the accident happened.

This has enabled the creation of a geographic “risk” assessment, information that can be fed into decision making in the district licensing process and with local alcohol plans.

The key focus of this process is to reduce harm and prevent further injury.
