The smash-hit Evita is returning to Timaru in a spectacular new production from the South Canterbury Drama League.

Considered by many to be Tim Rice/Andrew Lloyd Webber's best work, Evita tells the story of Eva Peron, wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Peron, from her humble beginnings through to the extraordinary wealth, power and status which ultimately led her to be heralded as the ‘spiritual leader of the nation’.

A fascinating snapshot of Argentina's history, Evita’s story is told in flashback, from her death - a moment of mass mourning - to her humble rural roots and aspirations to make it big as an actress in Buenos Aires. In the 1930s, she’s shown launching herself at any man who might advance her cause, finally latching onto the influential Peron, and assuming the role of dutiful wife.
