Almost all cultures have a festival of light, often around solstice, or equinox. For Māori, this is Matariki. It is the time when we mourn those who have passed away, farewell the year that has just passed, and plan for the year to come. We turn our faces to the light so the shadows fall behind us, but first we recognise the shadows, and acknowledge their passing. As a time of reflection and acknowledgement of the past, Matariki is an opportunity to think about our history, and understand how it guides us in our potential futures.

Join writers Patricia Grace, Kate Camp, Chris Tse and John Summers as they read from their own work and discuss their thoughts in relation to Matariki with Curator Māori, Tina Makereti.

The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions, get books signed and create their own handmade booklet of readings to take home.

6pm – 7.15pm Reading and discussion
